De gebroeders Kuijken kregen hun muzikale opleiding aan de Conservatoria van Brugge en Brussel: Wieland (°1938) studeerde er cello, Sigiswald (°1944) viool en Barthold (°1949) fluit. Parallel met deze "officiële" opleiding ontwikkelde zich een sterke interesse voor oude muziek en oude instrumenten. Als autodidakten specialiseerden ze zich dan respectievelijk op viola da gamba, barokviool en traverso. Tegelijk waren ze ook zeer aktief in de avant-garde muziek als leden van het Brusselse ensemble "Musiques Nouvelles". Het hoofdaccent lag echter op de barokmuziek: zo werd Wieland lid van het Alarius-ensemble (met o.a. Janine Rubinlicht en Robert Kohnen) in 1959, Sigiswald in 1964. Dit ensemble gaf concerten in heel Europa en Amerika en realiseerde een reeks -nu historische- plaatopnamen, tot het in 1972 ontbonden werd. Sinds dan werd er in losser verband samengewerkt met andere barokspecialisten zoals de jongere broer Barthold, Frans Brüggen, Gustav Leonhardt, René Jacobs, Lucy van Dael, Paul Dombrecht, François Fernandez, Bob van Asperen, Luc Devos, Ewald Demeyere. In verschillende bezettingen concerteerden ze overal in Europa, Israël, USA, Canada, Australië, Nieuw Zeeland, Japan. In 1972 richtte Sigiswald het barokorkest "La petite Bande" op, waarmee veel platen verschenen met werken van o.a. Lully, Campra, Muffat, Corelli, J.S. en C.P.E. Bach, Rameau, Gluck, Haydn, Mozart. Naast de kamermuziek (met opnames van Couperin, Bach, Telemann, Rameau, Haydn, Mozart, Debussy), leidt elk van de drie broers ook een solistische carrière; hiervan getuigen de vele plaatopnamen met werken uit het repertorium voor gamba of cello (Bach, Marais, Forqueray, Couperin, Beethoven), viool (Bach, Corelli, Vivaldi, Mozart) en fluit (Hotteterre, Telemann, Leclair, J.S., C.P.E. en W.F. Bach, Händel, Vivaldi, Stamitz, Haydn, Mozart, Hummel, F.X Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Debussy). De gebroeders Kuijken zijn alledrie docent aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel, Wieland en Barthold eveneens aan dat van Den Haag.

Les trois frères Kuijken ont fait leurs études musicales aux Conservatoires de Bruges et de Bruxelles: Wieland (°1938) y travaillait le violoncelle, Sigiswald (°1944) le violon et Barthold (°1949) la flûte . Parallèlement à cette formation traditionelle, ils témoignent d'un vif intérêt pour la musique ancienne et les instruments anciens. Ainsi, ils étudient en autodidacte la viole de gambe, le violon baroque, la flûte à bec et la flûte traversière baroque, tout en suivant la création contemporaine - notamment comme membres de l'ensemble "Musiques nouvelles" de Bruxelles. Progressivement, la musique ancienne est mise au premier plan de leurs activités: Wieland rejoignt l'ensemble Alarius (avec J. Rubinlicht et R. Kohnen) dès 1959, Sigiswald en 1964. Avec cette formation, ils parcourent l'Europe et les Etats-Unis et réalisent de nombreux enregistrements remarquables, jusqu' en 1972 quand l'ensemble a été dissolu. Depuis lors ils travaillent en diverses formations entourés d'autres spécialistes de la musique ancienne, notamment avec le frère cadet Barthold, Robert Kohnen, Gustav Leonhardt, René Jacobs, Lucy van Dael, Paul Dombrecht, François Fernandez, Bob van Asperen, Luc Devos, Ewald Demeyere. Des concerts les mènent partout en Europe, aux USA, au Canada, en Australie, en Nouvelle Zélande et au Japon. En 1973, Sigiswald fonde l' orchestre baroque "La petite Bande", avec lequel il enregistre un grand nombre d'oeuvres importantes (Lully, Campra, Muffat, Corelli, J.S. et C.P.E. Bach, Rameau, Gluck, Haydn, Mozart). À côté de leurs concerts et enregistrements de musique de chambre (Couperin, Bach, Telemann, Rameau, Haydn, Mozart, Debussy) chacun des trois frères Kuijken poursuit une carrière de soliste, dont témoignent de nombreux disques consacrés à la viole (Bach, Marais, Couperin, Forqueray), au violon (Corelli, Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart) et à la flûte (Hotteterre, Boismortier, Telemann, Händel, Vivaldi, Leclair, J.S., C.P.E. et W.F. Bach, Stamitz, Haydn, Mozart, Hummel, F.X. Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Debussy). Tous trois enseignent au Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, Wieland et Barthold donnant également cours au Conservatoire Royal de La Haye.

The Kuijken household, a short distance from Brussels, was unusually rich in musical talent. Three sons (out of six), born within eleven years of each other, manifested an early interest in music. Wieland studied cello at the Bruges and Brussels Conservatories, where he was awarded the Prix d'Excellence for his playing. Sigiswald became a violinist and the younger brother Barthold chose the flute. They, too, studied at the Bruges and Brussels Conservatories; Barthold, in addition, also studied at The Hague Conservatory.
The Kuijken brothers felt drawn to the music of the baroque composers. The more they immersed themselves in the musical and philosophical aspects of the music of the 17th and 18th centuries, the more they became convinced that the techniques and interpretations were inseparable from the historical context. Their inevitable conclusion was that the music should be played on original instruments as well. As autodidacts they studied the viola da gamba (Wieland), baroque violin (Sigiswald) and baroque flute and recorder (Barthold). Thus, they were pioneers - and are now regarded as authorities - in the field of historically-informed performance of "early music", focusing mainly on 18th century repertoire with frequent excursions into both the 17th and 19th centuries.
In 1959, Wieland helped form the Alarius Ensemble of Brussels with harpsichordist Robert Kohnen and others; Sigiswald joined them in 1964. This group made recordings (which are now collectors' items) and toured Europe, Canada and the U.S. until 1972, when it disbanded. Since then, the three Kuijken brothers have continued to perform and record together, most often with Robert Kohnen, but also with such other baroque specialists as Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen, Lucy van Dael, René Jacobs, François Fernandez and others. Each artist has also continued an active solo career that includes recitals, recordings and teaching (they all three teach at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Wieland and Barthold also at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague).

Wieland, Sigiswald und Barthold Kuijken gehören seit langem zu den renommiertesten Interpreten Alter Musik. Nach ihrem Studium vertieften sie sich in die musikalischen und philosophischen Aspekte der Musik des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts und stellten fest, daß Technik und Interpretation von ihrem historischen Kontext nicht zu trennen sind. Folgerichtig wandten sie sich schon früh der Interpretation Alter Musik auf originalen Instrumenten zu. So wurden sie Pioniere - und inzwischen anerkannte Autoritäten - in der historischen Aufführungspraxis Alter Musik, vor allem spezialisiert auf das Repertoire des 18. Jahrhunderts, aber auch mit häufigen Exkursionen ins 17. und 19. Jahrhundert.
1959 gründete Wieland Kuijken (zusammen mit u.a. Robert Kohnen) das Brüsseler Alarius Ensemble; Sigiswald kam später hinzu. Das Ensemble machte zahlreiche Aufnahmen und gastierte in Europa, Kanada und den USA bis zu seiner Auflösung im Jahr 1972. Seitdem spielen sie weiterhin mit Robert Kohnen und mit dem jüngeren Bruder Barthold. Aufnahmen und Konzerten erfolgten daneben auch mit Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen, Lucy van Dael, René Jacobs, Paul Dombrecht, François Fernandez, Ryo Terakado, Bob van Asperen, Luc Devos usw.
Jeder der Brüder hat außerdem eine respektabele Solokarriere vorzuweisen, die Konzerte (auch als Dirigent), Aufnahmen und Unterrichten einschließt - alle sind Professoren am königlichen Konservatorium in Brüssel, Wieland und Barthold auch in Den Haag.
